An athleisure look for the modern mom

Let's be honest here, as much as I would love to get dressed up and wear heels, you will find me in athleisure most days while I run around doing the mom thing.  I am trying to get back into the gym this year and I usually don't have time to run home and change my clothes.  I honestly love the athleisure look because it is just so practical for stay at home mom's as well as working moms on the weekend.  Investing in good quality athletic clothes helps in making you feel more put together rather than just throwing something on to work out in.  On this particular cold day in January when the temps never quite reached 40, I added my long double breasted coat over my all black gym look and I loved it!  I felt so good and put together despite just leaving the gym!

Black and camel for the work place

There is nothing more classic than black and camel.  Wearing all black is a bold yet sleek choice but adding in a pop of camel is a color combination that is sure to bring out the most classy and elegant of office looks.  One of my favorite ways to add camel to an outfit is with a good camel coat.  A true staple to your wardrobe, you will get so much versatility and wear out of a camel coat that goes with pretty much anything.

What makes me smile

Normally when a mom hears “school break” we all start to dread what feels like an endless amount of time until we are all back on our schedules again.  The kids get bored, the fighting seems to never end, errands are brutal and there is just never enough snacks.  I know I speak for a lot of us when I say that these breaks from school are often bittersweet.

This break I decided to do things a little different.  While I would normally be runnings errands most days just to get the kids out of the house for a bit, this time I stayed home every day and completely cleared off the schedule.  I devoted this break to being as attentive as I could with my kids and the outcome has been exactly what we all needed.  We’ve spent so much time together over the last week and this is the first time ever that being cooped up in the house for this long has actually been really enjoyable.  We’ve played and laughed, built forts, put puzzles together, watched movies, built Legos until our fingers were raw and truly just enjoyed our time together.  I love nothing more than seeing my kids happy and this break has made me smile so big!
I have put a lot of thought into what makes me smile over this holiday break.  While reflecting on my time with the kids, I have learned that it’s just the simple things that make me the happiest.  Knowing that my children are healthy and happy is at the very top of my list.  Life as a mom can be busy, stressful, hectic and chaotic.  While all of those things can make this the most challenging job, being a mom is also the most rewarding thing in my life.  I know that everything that contributes to making my life super busy during this phase of life is all in their best interest.  But sometimes, clearing off the schedule to do nothing but spend quality time together is just what you need.

Hello 2020! My goals and plans for the new year.

The past couple years have been rather…let’s just say challenging.  It has felt like the odds are always against me and no matter how hard I tried, everything felt like I was sprinting through water.  You know that feeling?  Where it's like your legs JUST WON'T MOVE.  It's not a good feeling and in fact, it is really defeating.  I think it has a lot to do with the phase of life that I'm in with the kids being young and I know that it will pass in time but I am definitely ready for an easier, smoother road ahead!  I have many goals and plans for this year but I would say that my main focus would be to find balance in my life.

While the last year was a big learning curve for me, I went into this year ready to hit the ground running with my blog.  I learned so much last year and have so many big ideas and plans for this year but there was something holding me back when it came to the taking action part.  Maybe it’s that so many ideas overwhelmed me and I didn’t know where to start, or maybe the fact that finding the time to do anything other than care for my kids is damn near impossible in this phase of life.  I don’t know what it is but in the process of trying to figure that out, I decided that the best way to begin would be to just sit down and write.  Writing is the part of blogging that has always been the most calming and therapeutic for me.  Sometimes taking photos, putting outfits together, linking items and writing blog posts can be so chaotic to arrange.  I have always loved the writing part because it feels good to open up and get things out.  Last year I focused so much on meeting my goals to move into a fashion direction that it became hard to balance everything.  While I am so proud of myself and happy that I took that leap, I still need to express what’s within.

I had a few revelations when it came to looking back on last year.  One of the biggest that stood out was that I hold back too much.  I’m either busy with the kids, being hard on myself about which particular photo to post or I’m letting roadblocks paralyze me from moving forward.  This year is all about breaking all of those walls down!  I have such a strong desire to share and I had to face the tough realization that if I don’t share then there’s nothing to inspire.  Yep.  That was a hard on one to accept and even harder to share here with you.  But here I am, OPENING UP!  The bottom line is that if I want to meet my ambitious goals then I need to work for what I want.

Ok, enough about blogging and the business side of my life.  Let’s move onto the more personal goals I have for 2020...

The one thing that we have at the very top of our list, and might be a little shocking to some, is that Loyal and I are both in need of change and we hope to achieve that by MOVING!  Yep, we are ready to sell our house and move on to whatever is next.  What that next thing is feels a little uncertain at the moment but surprisingly I am perfectly fine with welcoming the unknown and just seeing where life takes us.  What we do know for sure is that we see a move coming this year and most likely during this spring market.  We know the general area/neighborhood that we want to be in so where we stand right now is just waiting for things to start hitting the market and getting our house ready to list in the meantime.  This is why we’ve been slowly improving our house for the last little while.  I have been working around the clock to get all of the doors painted.  We still need to finish the pantry, I’m about 80% done with giving the baseboards a fresh coat of paint and I still need to repaint the entire downstairs!  It’s a lot but I know it will all pay off in the long run.  I'm praying for our house to sell quickly because I am sweating just thinking about having to show our house with 3 little tornadoes working against me.

I know I am going to get quite a few questions about this so I’ll try to clear a few up here.

1. Why are we moving?  We basically just need a change.  And we have our eye on a neighborhood that we feel will be a really positive change for us.  We're excited to do this and it feels right!

2. Are you building again?  No!  Quite the opposite actually.  We are hoping to buy a house that is a little older and one that needs a bit of a facelift so that we can really make it our own.

3. Why would you leave your new house (we built 3.5 years ago) for an old fixer upper???  Well, to put it simply, our design style has changed.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good white and bright house!  But, we’re ready for something with a little more character.  More drama, more risks, more moods and vibes, if you know what I mean.  I am craving a big creative project and I want to see more of an impact and transformation.  Our mood board is white, bright, black and moody.  I will share more about what we see for our next house in the coming weeks!!

I hope that clears up a few reasons as to why we are wanting to move.  It will be hard to leave this house but we are ready and the time finally feels right.  I also decided to just go ahead and open up about this.  In the past I would have waited and been all SURPRISE WE ARE MOVING!  But why?  Why do we all do this???  It’s like we have to keep everything in secrecy to ensure a good surprise factor.  I’m done with that this year because I think it would be so much cooler to look back and say “Wow, I remember when you first talked about wanting to do that and now here you are.”  Maybe I’m wrong here but I think that people enjoy coming along for the ride, especially ones that start from the very beginning.

Ok, now for a few of my own personal goals.

Every single year I make a resolution to 1. go to bed earlier, 2. wake up earlier, and 3. work out and get in shape.  Well this year, I AM DOING IT.  I decided to go ahead and get a bit of a head start towards the end of last year and it came a lot easier than expected!  I am so much more productive when I wake up early and my day in general just flows better.  I have learned that the key to that is to go to bed early.  This is always the area that I seem to struggle with the most.  Once I get the kids to bed is when I feel like I finally have time to myself to sit down and really get things done without a million interruptions.  In order to overcome that, I’m trying my best to be more intentional with my time when they are at school for a few hours so that I can get as much done as I can.

Working out and getting in shape.  I have always enjoyed going to the gym and eating a healthy diet.  My trips to the gym were far and few throughout the second half of last year.  I didn't really have the time or motivation to make it happen so I didn't.  I'm ready to get back into it and feel good again!  I finished out the end of the year with eating anything I wanted during our trip to New Orleans and that left me with seeing numbers on the scale that I have only seen while pregnant.  Woof.  Time to get that in check.

Other than that, I want to get back into reading.  My goal is to read one book a month this year!  12 books sounds super ambitious, especially since I have maybe read 2 books since I was pregnant with Loyal, but I came up with a strategy that will make it happen.  It’s going well so far!  I also want to travel more with the family but also do a trip with just Loyal and I.  We went to Cabo without the kids last year for a wedding and it was so great to have some time alone with him.  Hoping to do another one later this year!  I also want to get organized.  Boy do I need more organization in my life.  It's bad.

I'm really excited for 2020!  I think it's going to be an all around awesome year and I can't wait to see what's in store for us.   My moto for this year is 'Don't wait!'  No more second guessing, procrastinating, waiting for the perfect moment, etc.  I'm going for it!  All of it!
