Everything I eat to stay in shape

Hi friends!  I would say that one of the most asked questions that I get is about my diet and exercise routine.  I post a lot about making heathy choices with my diet and eating clean while I maintain a good workout routine.  As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that I have had to really clean up my diet and keep the splurging to a
minimum.  This has been a pretty difficult transition coming off of nursing.  I tend to loosen up my diet quite a bit while I'm nursing and bank on the fact that I need the calories to produce breastmilk and will burn them off in return while I breastfeed.  Once I knew that we were nearing the end of breastfeeding, I began to really crack down on my diet.

I normally eat a variation of the same things throughout the week.  I have cut my "cheat day" down to ONE DAY whereas before it basically took over our entire weekend.  I finally came to the realization that splurging Friday through Sunday amounted to almost half the week.  It always ended up being a major setback when it came to meeting my goals and ultimately wasn't worth it.  Now, just one day a week.  The other days of the weekend, we try to switch things up a bit all while keeping it clean and healthy.

During the week
Breakfast - Protein & a starch
2 egg whites and sweet potato
(I know this probably sounds weird but I promise it's not!  Think of the potatoes that you get at a breakfast restaurant.  I dice mine up and roast in the oven on 400 for about 20 minutes.)
2 hard boiled eggs and a whole wheat protein waffle with peanut butter

Lunch - Protein, vegetables, and a very small amount of carbs
Grilled chicken, salmon, ground turkey, or steak (I don't eat steak very often)
Brussel sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc.
Small amount (1/8 - 1/4 cup) of brown rice or whole wheat pasta

Afternoon snack - protein shake on days I workout or on days that I don't...
Apple with peanut butter
Banana with almond butter
Protein bar (I love the Power Crunch ones)

Dinner - Protein, vegetables, and a very small amount of carbs
Same suggestions as lunch
We have been doing Hello Fresh for a while now and we absolutely love it!   We keep talking about taking a break from it to go super clean with our diets for a little while but we've yet to pull the trigger on that.  We have Hello Fresh 3 nights a week and the other 3 we eat something similar to what's suggested above.  I always try to make a salad and eat that first so that if we get a burger from Hello Fresh, I may not eat it all.  I have been trying to select the healthiest options from Hello Fresh and cutting back on seasoning, breadcrumbs, etc to clean it up as much as I can.  I'll let you know if we end up parting ways!

Breakfast - Eggs and avocado toast (We are obsessed!  So many good recipes on Pinterest)
Lunch - Same as above (Eating a clean & healthy lunch is a great way to balance out your day if you plan on splurging or going out to eat for dinner.)
Dinner - We usually go out to eat one night on the weekends.  I always try to stay somewhat healthy while eating out but will occasionally get a burger and sub the fries for something else.  I always avoid anything fried as much as I can.  (Chic-fil-a is probably the only fried food I eat and I get the cobb salad.)  If we eat at home, we will cook something that's not as "meal preppy" but still keeping it healthy.  We love buffalo chicken salads or finding a good healthy recipe on Pinterest.

Because I am human, I do have to splurge here and there.  I have altered my treats significantly and have seen drastic changes as a result.  We used to really indulge on the weekends but I have stopped all of that and now if I want a treat I will buy Halo Top ice cream and eat half on Friday night and the other half on Saturday night.  It's no Ben & Jerry's or chocolate cake but when you are craving sweats, it's better than nothing!  My favorite flavors are mint chip, chocolate, chocolate chip cookie dough, and s'mores.  If I don't have ice cream then I will buy Boom Chicka Pop popcorn and have a little bit of that.  I really like the Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn.  As far as alcohol, I really don't drink that much at all.  Loyal will make margaritas on the weekends.  He makes them using fresh ingredients rather than with sour mix so that definitely cuts back on calories.  I hardly ever have one to myself and will just sip on his.

There you have it, my diet completely broken down for you!  I don't snack during the day, I drink only water (I gave up soft drinks a couple years ago), and I hardly ever drink alcohol.  I would say that this is definitely the longest that I have been consistent with diet and exercise and the result is that I am in the best shape I have ever been in.  I work out 4 days a week but honestly, 80% of the way I look is attributed to my diet.  I used to splurge more, like I said above, but since I made the changes to that, I have seen a significant difference.   I know this may seem boring to some but once you eat clean for a while, you will hardly miss the things you used to eat.
