Breakfast Room Makeover

We have been in our house for a little over a year now.  When we were going through the building process and picking out our selections, we knew that we would end up with a few projects to tackle down the road.  Between being busy with the kids, making a few large purchases for the house, and taking forever to finally agree on decisions, decorating the house started off rather slow.  We finally got around to hanging pictures in our living room and we were blown away at what a difference it made!  It warmed up the downstairs tremendously.  So from there we knew we needed to do something to our breakfast area, which is right off of the living room.
The first thing we did in this room was switch out the builder grade lighting that was installed when we moved in.  When we were choosing our selections for our house, everyone advised us to go with the base selection for our lighting package and change fixtures out to what we wanted down the road.  We knew pretty quickly what pendants we wanted but the light above the kitchen table wasn't as easy of a decision.  My husband and I tend to disagree often when it comes to decorating the house but I have to give him credit on this one.  I can't even remember what I originally had in mind for this space but he urged me to go with a white drum shade and I have to admit (although not often!) he was right.  It looks great!  After we got the lighting installed, we were pretty much left with a blank canvas.  The walls were bare and our furniture was simple and neutral.  We brainstormed a few ideas and eventually landed on Board and Batten for our wall treatment with simple black frames to hang above.
The board and batten was our first project that we did ourselves and I am really happy with how it turned out!  It gave this space just the right amount of warmth and charm that it needed.  Keeping this room light and bright was important to us and I think that was definitely achieved.   Our kitchen is all white so it flows nicely right beside it and also coordinates well with our living room.  We love it and can't believe we went so long without doing this!
I wanted something modern and very minimal for the art on the wall.  The greenery is hand painted watercolor that I found on Etsy
Did anyone spot Peter, our Elf on the Shelf?!  When limited daylight and kids home from school collide, you end up with an elf in your pictures that you can't touch!  Haha!  Extra festive over here. :)

*My table runner is sold out from Kate Spade so I linked a few others that I love just as much.
